The Madison Central Speech and Debate Team gives students at MCHS and Rosa Scott the opportunity to participate in all forms of speech and debate competition. The team competes in debate, platform speaking events, acting events and limited preparation speaking events. Consequently, there are opportunities for success and recognition for many different kinds of students. We travel to competitions throughout Mississippi and the Southeast, including Emory University and Isidore Newman in New Orleans, as well as the National Speech and Debate Association (NSDA) and National Catholic Forensic League (NCFL) national tournaments. You also have the opportunity to travel to out-of state national tournaments in places like California and Washington, D.C. Furthermore, qualifiers in the National Individual Events Tournament of Champions travels to that tournaments site annually. Team membership requires a commitment to practice and preparation, as well as a commitment to attend (at a minimum) four tournaments per year, usually held on Friday and Saturday. The rewards are great: speech and debate competition is one of the most sought-after extracurricular activities by college admissions and scholarship committees. Furthermore, speech and debate directly correlates with higher test scores and improved writing skills. If you think speech and debate competition might be for you, stop by and talk to Ms. Rachel Clapper in room 201. |
